All-Irish Club Set to Take the Field Again on July 15 on Staten Island

STATEN ISLAND, NY (July 5, 2023) – The Irish Wolfhounds are back and they’ve added a World Series champion to the coaching staff.

Former New York Yankees outfielder Shane Spencer will join the Wolfhounds in the dugout, when the world’s first all-Irish baseball club takes on the New York State Court Officer Blue Sox on Saturday, July 15 at Staten Island University Community Park. First pitch is scheduled for 6pm Eastern.

“I’m really happy to be involved with the Wolfhounds,” said Spencer, who lives in Connecticut. “The idea of helping Ireland get to the World Baseball Classic is exciting and I am looking forward to helping these players achieve their goal.”

Spencer will be signing autographs at the ballpark prior to the game, to benefit youth baseball programs in Ireland. The autograph signing will be held from 4pm-5pm, followed by the game at 6pm.

The roster of the Irish Wolfhounds Baseball Club includes college and pro baseball players who are citizens of Ireland. Each player is eligible to play for Team Ireland in the Olympics and World Baseball Classic.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for the Wolfhounds players to learn from Shane,” said Wolfhounds Manager Vin Malzahn. “He’s a guy that has plenty of experience at the major league level and he has also coached and managed in professional baseball.”

Joining Malzahn and Spencer will be former major league pitcher Rob Delaney, and James Lally. Lally pitched for Archbishop Molloy High School and St. John’s University, before a stint managing in the Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League.

“Our coaching staff changes from game to game because these guys have busy schedules,” explained Malzahn. “In our first game, we had an incredible coaching staff, led by Donegal Fergus from Loyola Marymount, and former major leaguer Steve Lyons. At every game, the players will get to work with and learn from a diverse, well-qualified coaching staff, to help them prepare for the road to the World Baseball Classic.”
