Game Recap: Irish Pitchers Throw Combined One-Hitter As Wolfhounds Roll to Victory
The Irish Wolfhounds defeated the New York State Court Officer Blue Sox by a score of 9-0 on Saturday night at Staten Island University Hospital Community Park in New York City. The festivities began with a brilliant performance of the national anthems of Ireland and America by Siobhan Noonan, followed by the ceremonial first pitch, thrown by Vicki McDermott from the Irish Consulate in NYC.
Wolfhounds shortstop Patrick Dillon got the Irish started with a leadoff single. Dillon came around to score on an RBI double by right fielder Tommy Dunleavy, giving the Irish a 1-0 lead. The Irish went on to score four more runs in the opening frame, thanks to RBI singles from Brian McAuliffe and Sean McAdams, followed by a 2-RBI single from Ryan Mackle.
Meanwhile, Irish pitchers dominated on the mound, as seven Irish pitchers combined on a one-hitter while striking out 19. Starter Mitch Hillert went three innings, striking out five. Hillert was followed by Seamus O’Connor, Garrett Crowley, and Norman Coleman-Goodwin, who allowed one hit with no walks in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings.
The Irish added to their lead in the fourth, thanks to a double by Conor Santoianni and an RBI single by Dunleavy. The Wolfhounds added three more runs in the seventh inning and three Irish pitchers — Brendan Kenneally, Terry Beeker, and Ryan O’Rourke — struck out the side in the final three innings to close out the victory.
